Title : Traditional Beer, Mbira, and Cultural Criticality: A Zimbabwean Story Trailer

Description : Traditional beer plays a pivotal role among people. It is a symbol of unity, hospitality, status, and pleasure. It is served with varying intentions, e.g., to celebrate, honor, appease, nourish, and often in all instances, done as a social activity. During such events, criticality served society by bringing people closer to a shared consensus, questioning perceptions, norms, and values while addressing various social concerns. Artists formed integral roles during these ceremonies, including leading, storytelling, interpreting, entertaining, criticizing, moderating, etc. Of the many forms of art, Music and Dance comprised an essential part of these events. The mbira, considered a sacred instrument, is symbolic of our traditional instruments. The ROOM project engaged in this activity to harvest the diverse forms of underlying criticality in African culture, uncover its significance in the various forms of art and media, focus on music, and redefine it to generate a shared understanding and consensual meaning.
